Things you may not know about Sugar Land
Once owned by the Mexican government & known for the numerous Oaks on the land, Oakland Plantation received its new name, Sugarland, after sugar cane stalks from Cuba were brought to Samuel Williams and grew ‘as tall as a man on a horse.’ By 1853 the land was rich in sugar cane and a mill to squeeze the juice from the cane was no longer running.
Two men, William Kyle and Benjamin Terry who had made a fortune in California, purchased the land, got the mill running, and set sites to have the railway run through Sugar Land. The land and its commodity passed many years and through many hands and eventually the Holly Corporation began refining the sugar and the city grew at a rapid rate. Incorporated in 1959 and adopting a mayor-council rule in 1981, Sugarland has become a well-known suburb community of Houston.
